Rivercrossing into Laos: in viaggio sul Mekong

Let’s continue our journey through Southeast Asia with a river crossing into Laos, that has widely been considered as one of the best trip in the region.

On the Meking river, there s a lush vegetation to observe during the 8- hour travel before approaching the little village that will host you for the night. After dealing with hostel owners that will be waiting for you at the dock, choose your stay for the night and enjoy a traditional dinner in one of the many restaurant available.

On the next day, relax on the boat for the next 8 hours of journey: magic Luang Prabang is waiting for you!

Continuiamo il nostro viaggio in Indocina attraversando via fiume il confine dalla Thailandia al Laos: due giorni sul Mekong,  ammirando uno dei più bei paesaggi della regione. Otto ore di viaggio prima di approdare ad un piccolo villaggio dove sarete assaliti dai proprietari dei tanti ostelli del paese: scegliete un alloggio per la notte e rilassatevi con una cena tradizionale.

Sveglia presto e via di nuovo, otto ore di navigazione prima dell’arrivo nella fantastica Luang Prabang!

A pink taxi from the airport to the city centre: a trip on Hello Kitty seat covers, passing shopping centres, Mac Donald’s and highways. Then a minivan till Chinatown: no posh stores, no air conditioned restaurants, no girls with Longchamp anymore: far from Siam Square, centre of “the Good Bangkok” there’s a different life going on. Taxis, old coloured buses and tuc tuc (the asian version of tricycles), fish markets and fruits street traders. A stroll through food stalls and massage centres, among nests of birds, tea vendors and pomegranate juice. Food markets, Chinese shops, Buddist temples and the Royal Palace, before foreshadow the future in an amulet market…The lights of skyscrapers light up in the distance, in this city that never sleeps.

Un taxi rosa shocking dall’aeroporto verso il centro : viaggio su sedili foderati con la faccia di Hello kitty, tra centri commerciali, Mac Donald’s e sopraelevate. Poi minibus fino a Chinatown: qui niente vetrine scintillanti, né aria condizionata, né ragazze firmate Lonchamp: lontano da Siam Square, centro dello shopping e della “Bangkok bene”, è tutta un’altra musica. Si cammina tra tempi e archi cinesi, zizagando tra statue di Buddha sorridenti, sdraiati e di fianco, commercianti d’oro e mercati di pesce, Thai massage e rainbow ice-cream, venditori di thè verde e di succhi di melograno. Per le strade taxi, autobus colorati e tuc tuc (versione asiatica dell’“ape cross” nostrana), bancarelle di imprecisati alimenti sotto sale e ambulanti con spinosi frutti pseudo tropicali. E un grassoccio porcellino di autentico finto oro che augura sorridendo buona fortuna.

In lontananza le luci di mille grattacieli si accendono, a intermittenza, in una città sempre all’erta, che mai dorme.

Let’s start with the first post on my trip to SouthEast Asia.

First of all, my travel itinerary (that I would highly recommend to anybody wanting to have a taste of this part of the world):

-         flying to Bangkok, spend there three days;

-         take a bus north to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, to visit the "Golden Triangle",

-         River crossing into Laos: a cruise on the Mekong, up toLuang Prabang, a fabulous city of wanders, ensnared between temples, wooden houses and mountains,

-         Fly from Luang Prabang to Hanoi, visit the city

-         Take a bus to the fabulous Halong Bay ( with dozens of islands that make the a treasure of incomparable beauty)

-         Head south to Hoi An and Saigon

-         Cross into Cambodia, Phnon Phen and then the wonderfulAgkor Wat

Ecco il primo post sul mio viaggio in Indocina.

Prima di tutto, l’ itinerario di viaggio (che raccomanderei a chiunque voglia scoprire questa parte del globo)

-         volo su Bangkok, tre giorni in città

-         bus verso il Nord, Chiang Mai e Chiang Rai e il “Triangolo d’oro”,

-         in barca sul Mekong, oltre il confine con il Laos, fino aLuang Prabang, città da favola, incastonata tra templi, case di legno e montagne,

-         aereo per il Vietnam (sembra vicino ma 24 ore di bus sarebbero un po’ troppe): un paio di giorni a Hanoi

-         altre due ore di bus fino ai paesaggi mozzafiato di Ha Long Bay e gita in barca tra le decine di isole della baia;

-         ai nuovo in marcia verso Hoi An, poi Saigon e il delta del Mekong

-         border crossing verso la Cambogia per terminare in bellezza tra le meraviglie di Angkor Wat
